Detonation in ammonia-based mixtures

Ammonia is a very important industrial chemical used in its pure form (e.g. as fertilizer and alkaline cleansers), and as a feedstock for a wide variety of chemicals (e.g. ammonium sulfate/nitrate/hydrogen phosphate and urea). Its thermodynamic properties, make ammonia attractive in the framework of industrial refrigeration. In addition, the possibility of using it as a fuel has recently sparked new interest since its combustion does not produce CO2 or unburnt hydrocarbons. Despite numerous potential industrial application, the risk of detonation in NH3-based mixtures has not been characterized in details. The goal of the present project is to assess the risk of detonation of NH3-based mixtures through an experimental and numerical investigation.
